Today I have the 2020 version of my Giant Sleigh Bells made from Dollar Tree Mixing Bowls!
In 2018 I made the original video that you see here
and 2019 was the galvanized metal paint finish version that you can see here
And this year I wanted to make one closest to my original inspiration that started it all back in 2018, a metal bell with peeling paint and rusty spots.
I tried many methods, painting, adding cinnamon, even bought a special kit, and nothing worked.
So this year, yes I’ve been working on this since last year, I did a lot of research, watched a lot of YouTube videos, read a lot of blogs and it wasn’t until I discovered Van Oaks Props, I called it the wrong name in the video, a senior moment, that I found what I needed!
He has the best channel for paint effects, made for big items like Halloween props but they can work for us small time crafters too.
His channel is Van Oaks Props
The two videos I combined techniques from were Rusted Metal look and
Cracked and Chipped paint , this technique I knew and had tried before on a “faux birch wood logs” project but his video inspired me to add it to his other technique and they worked great for the look I wanted. I tried the rusted metal technique in full, using the hairspray and water method but on my plastic surface (I think that was the issue anyway) I couldn’t get it to work, believe me I tried multiple times, most likely user error 😉
Anyway, the two techniques combined worked and I really hope you love the results as much as I do.
Products used:
Dollar Tree Mixing Bowls
Dollar Tree Shower Curtain ring (for largest 9” bowl topper)
Greenery and ribbon of your choice
Black spray paint
(I get mine at Walmart)Rustic Orange spray paint
Yellow spray paint
Brown/Dark Red spray paint (I used flat red primer)
School glue, clear or white, thinned with water
Acrylic paint color of choice, I do not recommend chalk style paint for this technique
Paint brush
Spray bottle of water, optional for making larger “rust spots”
Glue, suggestions
The Ultimate
Weldbond
E6000
you can use hot glue but you have to work very quickly and the bond is not as long lasting.
Method:
1. Spray 2 bowls with black spray paint and let dry completely.
2. When black in dry mist rustic orange, or similar color, over the bowl from about 15 – 18” height, you want color but not solid coverage.
3. Repeat with yellow paint but from about a 20-25” height, again misting, you are adding to the depth of color, not painting it a solid color.
4. Final layer is the brown or flat red primer, again from a 20” or so height, dusting over the bowl. If the orange looks too muted add a final layer of orange to bring out the rust color.
5. Leave to dry completely, this won’t take long.
6. Dilute school glue, white or clear works, with water until the consistency or thick syrup.
7. Brush all over the bell in just one direction, around the bell in circles working upwards, you want a thick layer all in the same direction.
8. Let dry until tacky and then paint with your topcoat of acrylic paint, do not use chalk paint as it is too thick and won’t give the same effect. I mixed white and antique white together to get the color I wanted but that color is your choice, darker colors will not show the crackles as much. Add the acrylic paint the same as the glue, all strokes in the same direction.
9. Let dry and watch the crackles appear. If when dry there is not enough “rust” showing through, then use a spray bottle of water and spray on areas you want more showing through. Use a stiff brush in a circular motion to remover some of the top layer of paint, spraying with water as you scrub to let the under-color show through. Again, let dry completely.
10. Adhere the two bowls together with glue.
11. Paint the edges where the bowls join in a darker color if desired.
12. Make a template for the keyholes in the bottle of the bell, it should look like a circle with a wide rounded stick at the bottom. The template length should be almost the length of the rim of the bowl to place where the bowl sits flat.
13. Trace the template in 4 equal spaces on the base bowl, I use a circle folded in 4 and opened up on the base of the bowl to line up where I want to keyholes.
14. Paint the keyholes black, go slowly and steady as these are what make the bells look real.
15. Drill a hole in each side of the napkin ring, start with a small drill bit and work up in size, a large one will split the ring. Then add the book ring through both holes to make the topper, paint brown with a distressing layer of cream (or whatever color you bell is) to match the bell. Adhere it to the top of the bell. An alternative method is to either drill two holes, as in my original video original video linked above, or use a wood burning tool to make two holes, as in my 2019 video again linked above and thread nautical rope to make the hanger.
16. If using the largest, 9”, bowl you will make the topper from a slice of pool noodle and a shower curtain ring, paint as in the smaller topper.
17. Decorate the bell as desired with greenery, florals, bows or ribbons.

Scor-Pal Harvest Wreath Tutorial
Today I'm sharing the tutorial for the wreath I made for More Than One Score with Scor-Pal challenge
Products needed:
Wire Wreath form - Mine was from the Dollar Tree
Wired ribbon of choice
Paper Pad - I used Farmstead Harvest by DCWV
Any other embellishments you would like - I used dried Wheat, silk leaves, a cotton stem, pinecone, vintage buttons for "flower" centers.
Sign - Target Bullseyes Playground
Border Punch for edges of flowers
Scor-Pal Eighths board
Scor-Tape
Hot Glue gun and glue sticks
Paper Trimmer
Amazon Affilate links may earn me a small commission but do not increase the price for you, they simply allow me to continue to bring crafts to you
You start by wrapping the ribbon around the wire wreath form, hook one end under a row at the back and hot glue the pieces together to stop them slipping off. Then wrap the ribbon around the wreath form, overlapping slightly on each "wrap" to form a base for your decorations.
It will look like this when complete.
Using your border punch, punch allong the edge of a 12" piece of patterned paper.
Using your paper trimmer cut paper to be 1 1/2" wide and 12" in length.
Line the paper up at the top of the Scor-Pal and score the whole length at 1/2" increments.
Pleat your paper in a "hill and valley" style along the length of the paper.
Attach Scor-Tape to the end to adhere both ends together.
Form into a ring and attach, it will look like this.
Gently press the piece into a circle to form the flower.
Add hot glue to secure the flower together, I like to add a circle of cardstock for extra support.
You make these flowers in different sizes, the wider the paper the larger the flower, for flowers where the strip is more than 2" wide you will need to use additional strips or the paper will tear when you try and flatten it to make the flower. Add any embellishments you like to the center, I chose some vintage buttons
Adhere the paper flowers to the wreath with hot glun, for the floral stems I simply pushed those into the where the ribbon overlapped but you can hot glue them too. Add the sign with hot glue too.
I hope you enjoyed this little different from usual project, I like to combine crafts and so using paper crafts in home decor is a nice change from making a card.

Scor-Pal "More Than One Score" #75 Anything Goes or Harvest/Halloween
Happy Fall Y'all!
It's time for a new challenge at More Than One Score with Scor-Pal and this month along with our "Always Anything Goes" we have the option of Harvest or Halloween!
It's my turn to host the challenge and so on the 15th of this month you will get to see the whole tutorial on how I created this wreath using rosette style flowers using my Scor-Pal Eighths board
I wanted to incorporate paper crafting with home decor/decorating as I know as a person who has been crafting for over 20 years it is nice to switch things around but still including your main craft.
For the majority of those 20+ years I was a paper crafter and have drifted away from it a little, enjoying more creating things that are useful and decorative for my home. So instead of just making a card etc I decided to put my Scor-Pal and Scor-Tape to good use and make the flowers to go on this wreath!
I'm really happy with how it turned out and hope you love it too.

What's more exciting? This is the first project made in my newly completed craft room re-do!
We have been working hard on this for months and I have a tour of it on my YouTube channel and would love you to take a few moments and have a look :)
Be sure to come back to either here or The Scor-Pal blog on the 15th to see all the steps to making this wreath.

Scor-Pal #72 Summer/Patriotic or Anything Goes
It's time for a new challenge at More Than One Score with Scor-Pal and this month along with our "Always Anything Goes" we have the option of Summertime or Patriotic!
I went with a Summertime theme and used this super sweet paper pad from Michael's as my inspiration and made a sweet little receipts book for my crafting/home decor receipts.
And don't worry, it's hidden far, far away from my hubby! LOL
I used my Scor-Pal Eighths to score 1/4" scores along the edges of the pages, making it very easy to add to the cover of the book using my Scor-Tape. I then added little pockets for each separate store.
I love the lemon and green combination of this paper pad, it makes me smile when I see it
Don't say who told you but there is a SALE on Scor-Tape right now!
Also there is another EXCITING NEW PRODUCT in the store, please check it out by clicking the aforementioned link!
Recipe:
Paper and Embellishment - Mint to Be paper pad by Craft Smart (Michael's)

More Than One Score at Scor-Pal #64 Harvest/Fall/Halloween
It's time for a new challenge at More Than One Score at Scor-Pal and this time we want to see your Fall/Harvest or Halloween projects.
I decided to go with Halloween and make a Haunted House!
It started with 2 wooden house shapes from the Dollar Tree and then I covered them with cardstock and used my Scor-Pal to make the sides to create the house and then to create the corrugated roof.
I added a wooden fence and felt accents and then a string of lights inside to make it glow!
I really had a lot of fun with this, I'm actually thinking of making another and filming it for YouTube so you can see how I actually made it.

More Than One Score at Scor-Pal #60 Warmer Days (think Summer, warm colors etc)
It's time for a new challenge at More Than One Score at Scor-Pal and this time we want to see your "Warmer Days" creations, you can use a Summer/Outdoors theme, or use warmer colors, the choice is yours!
I have decided to make a double tri-fold card with a pop up sentiment for my project and I have created a "create with me" video so you can make one of these yourself!
The description of the score markings are in the description box of my video, along with all the items needed to make it.
I would love to have you subscribe, I am mixing up easy to create home decor DIY's with paper crafting projects so there is a little for everyone to enjoy :)
Project Recipe:
Patterned Paper and Sentiment of your choice, I used Orange Blossom by Recollections, a hot buy from Michael's
Scor-Tape adhesive

A quick tip when using double sided patterned paper for this project, be wary of both sides of the paper as with the graduated tri-fold, you will see the back of the paper as well the front so make sure the patterned look good in the direction you cut the paper.
I really hope you liked this and will come and join us in the challenge, we keep wanting to give away our $25 gift certificate and need our 10+ entrants to be able to do that, More Than One Score at Scor-Pal

It works like a blog hop but instead of blogs you "hop"through peoples videos, all of which have a hedgehog theme!
Many of these channels are papercrafters, so my fans here at Both Sides of The Paper will love their creations.
I decided to do a cute little crafty DIY where I'm showing you how to make an adorable Hedgehog!
You can find all the details of the hop, THERE ARE PRIZES!! in the description box of my video, but I'm giving you the rundown here as well :)
The Hedgehog Hollow is generously sponsoring this giveaway hop!
You can enter to win one of two prizes…
1.) A Tonic Studios Goodie Bag!
2.) A Hedgehog Hollow Coupon Code Voucher!
To enter, please see the Rafflecopter link here: http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/07ad29b41/?
The Hedgehog Hollow Coupon Code Voucher is a worldwide giveaway; the Tonic Studios Goodie Bag is a U.S. only giveaway.
